The project has been developed to create an archaeological profile of the monastic complexes and their surroundings. Our findings will contribute to a better understanding of what existed at Wearmouth and Jarrow before the foundation of these monastic communities. We also hope to understand more fully, how the creation of these new Christian communities with strong Continental contacts and influences, impacted upon and changed the landscape between the Tyne and Wear, and the region as a whole. The project will therefore support the bid for World Heritage Status by providing information on the archaeology of the sites and their immediate hinterlands. We will help define the buffer zones for the World Heritage sites at Wearmouth and Jarrow and help characterise the archaeological potential of the sites and their wider hinterlands.
