Fieldwork at Wearmouth and Jarrow
In May and June our Project Officer Alex Turner has been out at both sites undertaking further field recording. Survey is being undertaken using a high speed laser scanner to complete a stone by stone survey of the entire structure at each site. The survey produces high definition images of the fabric inside and outside the building. This will provide a template for the geological analysis that will be undertake in a later phase of the project. It will also help us reconsider the phasing of both structures and unite the above ground structures with the results of below ground survey using Ground Penetrating Radar and will inform our use of Optical Luminescence Dating on the mortars in various parts of each church.
Sophie Laidler, our EH funded student undertaking the interlocking project: 'Contemporary and Competing Vistas: Public Perceptions of Wearmouth and Jarrow', has started interviewing participants and holding focus groups in the area. This strand of the project is aimed at capturing information on how the public and various regional and local stakeholders perceive the twin monasteries and their remarkable history, archaeology and legacy. For more information on this project and how to participate, please see Latest News from the Project on this website.
